Teachers' Training Workshop at Kennedy School

On 24th February, 2012, sixty teaching staff of Kennedy School participated in the SEPAS's training workshop.  The workshop started with a brief introduction of Jane Goodall Institute, its Roots & Shoots programme, the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme of this year, and followed by various global environmental and humanitarian issues, including climate change, shark-finning, over-fishing, solid waste and food waste in Hong Kong, wealth distribution, Gini-Coefficient, world hunger, animal cruelty and consumption of dairy products.  Majority of the participants found that the training workshop was rich in content and useful to them, many of the selected topics and relevant short movie clips were thought-provoking, and had enhanced their awareness of global environmental issues.  Most teaching staff also found the demonstrated fishing game and the paper bag game very useful for teaching students about sustainable fishery and poverty issues.

Student Training Workshop at Kennedy School

The Student Environmental Protection Ambassadors of Kennedy School completed the second training workshop on 23rd Feb 2012, covering the topics of wealth distribution, Gini Coefficient, world hunger, and fair trade.

The Ambassadors had lots of fun playing the Fruits of Fairness game by using ten chairs to represent the entire wealth of the U.S. and all of them as the total population of the country.  They were very quick in adopting the concept of uneven distribution of wealth and its adverse effects on social, political and economic instability.  Having introduced the basic concept of Gini Coefficient, the students were able to distinguish representative countries with relatively even, less even and very uneven distributions of wealth.

The students were also touched by stories about how some individuals made positive changes to help the underprivileged around the world, and the contrast of blood chocolate and fair trade chocolate.  They ended the workshop with much joy sharing fair trade chocolate bars.
